Laser Tattoo Removal
Laser Tattoo Removal is a medical procedure that employs laser technology to break down tattoo pigments, facilitating their natural elimination by the body’s immune system. This method is effective for individuals seeking to remove unwanted tattoos for personal or professional reasons.
Laser Technology Used:
The procedure utilizes Q-Switched lasers, known for emitting powerful pulses in extremely short durations (nanoseconds). This approach effectively fragments tattoo pigments into smaller particles, which are then gradually eliminated by the body’s natural processes. While newer picosecond lasers are available, their superiority over traditional Q-Switched lasers has not been conclusively demonstrated. Therefore, Dr. Chady Kallassy employs the Spectra Q-Switched laser by Lutronic for tattoo removal treatments.
Procedure Details:
- Preparation: Prior to the session, a topical anesthetic cream is applied to the tattooed area to minimize discomfort. Protective eyewear is provided to shield the eyes from laser exposure.
- During the Session: The laser device emits targeted pulses that penetrate the skin to reach the tattoo ink. Patients may experience sensations similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The duration of each session varies based on the size and complexity of the tattoo.
- Post-Treatment Care: After the procedure, the treated area may exhibit redness, swelling, and the formation of scabs, which typically resolve within 8 to 10 days. It’s crucial to keep the area clean, apply prescribed ointments, and avoid picking at scabs to promote proper healing.
Number of Sessions Required:
Complete tattoo removal is a gradual process, often requiring multiple sessions spaced at least two months apart. The total duration of the treatment plan can extend over two years, depending on factors such as tattoo size, ink color, depth, and individual skin response. Patience and commitment are essential throughout this period.
Potential Side Effects:
While laser tattoo removal is generally safe, potential side effects include temporary skin discoloration, textural changes, and, in rare cases, scarring. Adhering to post-treatment care instructions significantly reduces these risks.
