Brown spots

Brown spots, also known as solar lentigines, sun spots, or age spots, are flat, brown patches that commonly appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the face, décolleté, and the backs of hands. These spots result from an accumulation of melanin—the pigment responsible for skin color—in the epidermis, often due to excessive sun exposure and the natural aging process.

Laser Treatment for Brown Spots:

To effectively address these pigmented lesions, Dr. Chady Kallassy utilizes the Q-Switched laser, specifically the Spectra model by Lutronic. This advanced laser targets the melanin within the spots, delivering high-intensity pulses in extremely short durations (nanoseconds). This process, known as a photomechanical effect, shatters the melanin into tiny particles, which are then naturally eliminated by the body’s immune system. Typically, this treatment effectively reduces or eliminates brown spots in one or two sessions.

Procedure Overview:

  1. Preparation: The treatment is performed on clean, makeup-free skin. Protective eyewear is provided to shield the eyes from laser exposure.
  2. During the Session: The laser emits brief pulses targeting the pigmented areas. Patients may experience mild discomfort, such as a tingling sensation and warmth, but the procedure generally does not require local anesthesia.
  3. Post-Treatment Care: Immediately after the session, the treated spots may appear whitened or exhibit slight pinpoint bleeding, accompanied by a warm sensation that subsides within an hour. Over the next 10 to 15 days, the spots may darken and form fine, dry crusts before gradually fading. Applying soothing cream and sunscreen is recommended during this period, and sun exposure should be avoided to prevent recurrence.

Precautions:

Sun exposure is a significant factor in the development and recurrence of brown spots. Therefore, diligent sun protection is essential to prevent new spots from forming. It’s important to note that any spot with a suspicious appearance or those resistant to laser treatment should undergo further medical evaluation to rule out other conditions.
